4th of July in DC?! At the SMITHSONIAN Folklife Festival?! Yipeee! I'll be there and I'll bring friends from the www.SchoolofLife.org ashram where I stayed last weekend (before I presented the Healing Power of Music)...I'd love to book you in these parts (NOVA) if you have any openings. Can we talk?
I’m finding writers like you and others on Substack are a great antidote to the harsh, divisive rhetoric on social media. It takes time, and sometimes a little introspective work to make changes and find peace. Here’s a current practice that I just started which seems like a great accompaniment to your beautiful music, Carrie.
this is exactly what I am doing. With death of my beloved husband of 50 years, I find my self having to give my self grace to grow and become and be who I am.
I am comforted in reading your words today. A year ago you sang in an online concert, You Can Do This Hard Thing, just after our granddaughter was born. The Rose unfolds! Two days ago my home church in Spencer burned to the ground from lightning and I cannot unfold today. So, I thank you for reminding me of the rhythm of unfolding, and folding, and unfolding again and again.
I liked this one. I saw in my mind’s eye my little salmon colored rose bush. It had been plunked down and left in a plastic nursery pot in my front flower bed by the previous owner of our home. Their intensions for replanting had been forgotten in other business. It had been so long in the pot, a long root had escaped through a hole in the bottom seeking deeper grounding. This past spring, I decided to give it a permanent home.
The perfect spot was chosen. A hole was prepared complete with special rose fertilizer. With shovel in hand and some, “ it will be okay,” promises, the sweet little thing was dug out and tenderly placed, tamped down and watered into its new home. I kept my eye on it. I talked to it. I smiled toward it every time I headed toward the car in the driveway.
It is so happy. Blooms galore have blessed me. New branches have reached out to redecorate its new home. I swear I can hear it sing. So in light of Carrie’s prompt, sometimes we just get plunked down somewhere and we do the best we can. Sometimes grace is only extended when you are uprooted and replanted. Blessed be those who care enough to move us and fertilize us and smile at us as we become.
Thank you for this lovely reminder Carrie. I need to practice more compassion for myself. I love the metaphor of a flower, just bloom as best you can in a day, that’s all that is needed to be right where you need to be.
I’m excited for the Buskirk Chumley concert!! I’m planning on coming with my hubby all the way from Ontario!! We will be there for the whole weekend!!!
This is part of my 50th birthday celebrations even though my birthday is 2 months before lol!! Plans are in the works!!
Oh my gosh. That’s a road trip my friend. But I’m so glad to hear you’re coming… Bloomington is really a wonderful musical and artistic community. And there’s lots of really great places to
Compassion, such a beautiful gift for myself and for others. When it takes me 15 minutes to press an elevator button that has been placed in such a way that people in chairs cannot reach easily, my face lights up brighter than the rim of the button. I have finally convinced my body to move in a direction and accomplish such a simple task. That was not a waste of time but rather a journey toward honoring the potential of my limited fine motor skills. And the people in the elevator with me who honored my request to try and clapped when I achieved my goal! I move at the Speed of Soul and I'm ever so grateful for my community of encouragement which now includes you and your music, Carrie!
Oh Carrie! I so want to see you with Tommy Prine ... I have brought many friends to your shows. My dear friend Lora traveled with me often. We also saw John Prine together in Indy. You were seated two rows in front of us. We quietly “fan gurled” behind you, choosing to respect your evening out, while delighting in “sharing” an event with you. I’m having a heart stress test this week. It will determine my capabilities. Hoping for the best 🤞🏼
Oh wow, so wonderful to hear you were at that incredible show. John Prine was, and is, a songwriter songwriter. I’m really looking forward to Tommy being on the Buskirk show I’ve heard him several times and he’s wonderful and his own right. I think folks are going to love them… I know I do :-)

What a beautiful analogy.

As usual, GOD Bless. You are most definitely where you need to be and I’m attempting to follow you down the same path. Carry on.
Thankyou
