Oh my so many different ones with stories. Pumpkin. My brothers would pile on the whipped cream and Mom would say "having a little pie with that whipped cream are you?". And then warm strawberry rhubarb is delicious. And peach should not be forgotten.. And is a chocolate mousse pie a pie or a mousse? Yum yum! What a delightful way to start my day!

Strawberry rhubarb. But then there was Aunt Beulah’s apple pie and Aunt Sue’s blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream.

Peach-blueberry pie is my favorite. Also my daughter’s. I made one on “nesting day,” the day before she was born. When I went into labor that night, I told my husband as we packed the car to head to the hospital, “Don’t forget the pie.” I ate a piece after she was born. It is still her choice for “birthday pie” 39 years later.

My favorite is pumpkin, but my spouse won't eat it. His favorite is cherry, but I won't eat it. So we settle on mixed berry with a lot of whipped cream, and small personal pies. Life is about compromises, right?

Apple pie with my grandma's cream cheese crust😁. However, even with a cooking degree I don't have the pie crust gene, just the recipe card

As my Dad used to say, I never met a pie I didn’t like. Right now, as my rhubarb is breaking through the ground, I’m anticipating a rhubarb custard pie. The recipe was passed down from my aunt, so lots of loving ancestral memories will be baked into that pie.

The day before Thanksgiving, my family gathers to make 4 kinds of pie. We work in teams.

Our mother still coaches us in making the crust. I struggle to roll a circle.

We make pumpkin, apple, cherry, and bourbon pecan. My sister's adult children and their husbands are bringing their pie tastes to our gathering: sugar pie and butterscotch. Of course, we sample once they cool.

My family is particularly fond of rhubarb custard with meringue on top. A recipe from Mother in Law. However, my favorite “pie” story is about my son who made a Christmas card in first grade. It read, “I hope thar (there) is pies (peace) in the world!”

A statement that is true on both counts.

My grandmother always made apple and I still use her recipe for crust, 2 cups flour, a little salt, 2/3 cup shortening ( she uses all lard, I use 1/2 lard, 1/2butter), 1/3 cup cold water. Always think of her when I bake.

I've got to go with Blueberry. First of all, I absolutely adore picking blueberries, so the whole concept of this activity "birthing the pie" is in my mind when collecting the berries. I also really enjoy the simple art of making homemade pie crust. I truly believe I channel my maternal Grandmother (and Great Grandmother) when rolling out a crust and cutting just the right design to lay atop the filling. To me, making homemade pie crust is a therapeutic activity..... very Zenlike.

Okay....now I am ready for Blueberry season!!! 😉👍

Great pies include my Grandmother Nora's Butterscotch Pie. And then have been a big fan of Cherry Pie all my life. Grandma Gladys made Old Fashioned Sugar Cream pies that made my eyes cross with sweetness. I agree-only 3 kinds-warm-hot-cold. Patty Griffin's song "Makin' Pies" is a favourite.

My favorite pies are fresh peach hot from the oven! And, cherry.

My favorite pie story is the one recounting the first time I baked a pie. Dad's favorite was cherry so Mom helped me get all the ingredients out and I made the pie. After dinner the pie was put on the table. I sliced not thinking anything about how difficult it was to cut the slice out. It was my first pie after all. Dad got the first piece. Then, Mom and my brother. Dad managed to fork off a bite. He put it in his mouth and chewed and chewed. never saying a word about how awful it was! Well, Mom took one bite or tried to and asked me to tell her how I had put the ingredients in. As we went through them, it became clear that I had left out the Crisco! We were eating paper mache!

The things we do for our children! Even attempting to eat a pie that was truly baked paper mache!

Years ago when I lived in Alabama I baked a pecan pie for a friend who had done me a favor. I dropped it off at her office, but never heard a word back. Later I asked if she had gotten it. She said yes. Then I asked if she liked it. She answered with a funny southern expression. “Honey, that pie was so good it made me wanna slap my granny!”

My wife Nancy was the best pie maker I knew. Lovely crusts, made (as an Indiana farm girl would) with lard. Nice and flaky. She even learned to make wonderful sugar-free cherry pies when I became a diabetic years ago. Alas, those days are past. Still, if anyone wants to send me a homemade sugar-free pie (as if!), I'd happily enjoy it. :)
