Last Wednesday Robert and I sat in two kayaks on a glassy lake as the lightning bugs began to flash their mysterious Morris code. We went to the lake that evening because a group of friends were gathering for the rising of the Strawberry Moon, the first full moon of June. It is believed that the name, Strawberry Moon, originated with Algonquin peoples, honoring the time of year when strawberries bear fruit. It was comforting to watch this faithful celestial event, to let my breath catch as the first red rays spilled over the trees. It felt old and true. It made sense.
