The Johnny Carson Show came on after I was tucked in bed. Even in those days, I wasn’t an easy sleeper and often I would still be awake listening to the sound of the television downstairs when “Heeerrrrrre’s Johnny” echoed up from our den in the basement.
In those days there were only three channels, CBS, NBC and ABC. You couldn’t record and watch a show later and so popular shows were cultural events that the country gathered around. Friday at 7pm there was the new episode of Batman, Sunday at 6pm The Wonderful World of Disney followed by Bonanza or Wild Kingdom. The only daily shows were my mother’s soap operas, As the World Turns or All My Children, reruns after school of the I Love Lucy Show, the nightly news with Walter Cronkit, and The Johnny Carson Show.
