GOS Kitchen Table Conversations

John McCutcheon: Songwriting, Spirit & Honoring The Ordinary
6

I want to thank all A Gathering of Spirits Supporting Subscribers. I began this adventure just over a year ago and I have loved the opportunity to share music, poetry, thoughts about living in this beautiful and sometimes broken world. Without your support this community gathering place would not be possible.

I’m so moved by your comments, insights and the way we hold one another’s thoughts and experiences with such compassion and care. I love your thoughtful input on new songs, poetry and prose pieces I post here. In general, I really love this community and your support has allowed me to dedicate time to this really exciting experiment. Thanks for joining me on this journey!

Kitchen Table Conversations

I will occasionally post informal chats with an amazing human being…an author, poet, songwriter or someone whom I just find a beautiful conversation partner. The topics will be varied and as I said informal. Think of these conversations as my invitation to you to pull up a chair to the kitchen table or take an open rocker on the front porch with us.

This zoom conversation is with my friend John McCutcheon. John is a widely celebrated storyteller, musician, artist and activist -a writer’s writer. He’s also a human being of enormous heart and spirit, a philosopher with a guitar (or hammered dulcimer, banjo, fiddle or the other 8000 instruments he plays). And…he totally cracks me up on a regular basis.

We talk about storytelling and songwriting that honors the ordinary, that delights in the details and yet points to something wider than ourselves. John and I have been collaborating on a collection of songs this year and it was great fun to talk about the joy we’ve found in the process and to have John perform one of our co-written songs.

This is a “first video” and about mid way through you’ll hear my dog, Lily June-bug, alerting us to the important and earthshaking news of an eminent arrival of a timely and honorable UPS delivery person.

Week Long Workshop With John McCutcheon & Carrie Newcomer At Ring Lake Ranch

John and I will be co-teaching a workshop this Aug at the amazing Ring Lake Ranch in WY. Dawn, Day, Dusk, Dark: A Celebration of Music as Uncommon Prayer

Join Internationally acclaimed songwriters John McCutcheon and Carrie Newcomer for conversation, stories and songs infused with inspiration found in the contemplative works of modern mystics like Thomas Merton, Ranier Maria Rilke, and Richard Rohr. In a world that can often feel overwhelming, chaotic or broken, Carrie and John will explore how observing and honoring the patterns and spirit always present in nature can help ground us and lift us up in daily and personal ways, guiding us as instruments of peace and action. Currently the session is full, but they are accepting folks for the waiting list -please contact Amanda Verheul amanda@ringlake.org
