Welcome, everyone, to Room At the Table: Kitchen Conversations — A series of conversations with poets, authors, musicians, spiritual thinkers and folks from all walks of life — about their work, about what sustains them, inspires them, what helps them stay grounded in challenging times. This first episode is with beloved Author Parker J. Palmer. Upcoming episodes will include Poet, Jack Ridl; Author and Theologian, Philip Gulley; Musician and Director of The Hundreth Hill Artist Retreat, Krista Detor and more!
NOW, on to the videopodcast!
Today on “Room At The Table” I’m delighted to welcome my friend and colleague, Parker J. Palmer to the series. Parker needs no introduction for all of us who have loved his work for years, but for anyone new, Parker J. Palmer is an author, speaker, activist, podcast host, founder and senior partner emeritus for the Center for Courage & Renewal. He’s a mentor, spiritual thinker, world changer, a colleague and someone that I'm so grateful to call my dear friend. Parker has ten life changing books including On the Brink of Everything, A Hidden Wholeness, Let Your Life Speak, The Courage to Teach, and his powerful book for these times, Healing the Heart of Democracy. Let Your Life Speak, The Courage to Teach and Healing the Heart of Democracy have been recently reissued with new introductions, study guides and videos. Parker also has a thriving Facebook Author Page and regularly posts thoughtful, insightful, prophetic and timely offerings.
I hope you enjoy sitting around the table with Parker and I as we explore the call of the genuine, living with humor and integrity, and what keeps us both hopeful in challenging times.
Warmly,
Carrie
It was a lovely experience getting a chance to re-explore his beautiful book on vocation, Let Your Life Speak: Listening to the Voice of Vocation. It was a book that had a profound effect on me, and I encourage everyone to check it out. The 25th Anniversary edition has a beautiful new introduction by Parker. In this episode, Parker and I hang out in my kitchen and talk about this particular book, thoughts about living undivided, listening to the soul’s imperative, and what is keeping us both grounded in these challenging times.
Question:
What do you think about this idea of listening to the genuine within us? What do you think about Parker’s idea that there is nothing sadder than getting to the end of one’s life and realizing you never really showed up as your true self? I really loved this conversation and hope you do too.
Music Always Music
This is a link to a song that was written from one of Parker’s poems “Two Toasts”. The song has the same title and was first released on my album “The Geography of Light” on Rounder Records.
